Scent of a Woman
Yeah, I know that Mr. Pacino won an Academy Award for this role. But, to be honest, I thought that his performance as a blind, curmudgeony war vet was a tad over the top, not to mention, a bit overrated. And yeah, while I agree that Al was in high octane form, still, I felt that the Oscar was awarded more because of an accumulation of years of developing his "loud screen persona", something which, IMO at least, has reached the level of consistently being "too much". Besides, I much more enjoy watching an actor, especially a seasoned one like A-Pac, bring a fresher approach to a role than the same-ol' same-ol' of which has become their standard signature. All that said, Scent Of A Woman is still an enjoyable journey of eye-opening inner-discovery and burgeoning friendship between two people of different chemistry.

Baraka
There are only two words that can describe this film: Koo oolll.....! No script, no dialogue, no storyline. Just a montaged journey that spans the entire planet. And this is one journey that is worth taking because it is one that not only takes the scenic route, but takes good advantage of it.

Happy Accidents
Before there was the Time Traveler's Wife, Donnie Darko, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time or Kate & Leopold, there was Happy Accidents. A time-traveling love story about timeless love transcending the timelessness that is time. Or is it a loving time-traveling story about the transcendence through infinity which is true love....? Either way, in short, it's a straight-on chick-flick theme with just a twist of wormholed logic.

But first, he must put together a crew capable enough to help him pull off the complicated heist, along with the proper tools required for such a security surrounded target. U.F.O. Abduction
Here's a movie that is also known as the "The McPherson Tape" but was originally planned to be called "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner", until they found out that that title had already been taken. A Thanksgiving family get-together gets interrupted by big-eyed visitors from, well... I'm sure most of you know by now where this is going. Upon deeper reflection of this film's holiday theme, I think that the story here might be an allegory of what happened to the Native Americans after they had the Pilgrims (i.e. White man) over for a turkey dinner. The McPherson family is supposed to represent the Natives and the aliens, the white man. But I'm not sure. I may have just made that up to sound allegorically astute for this post.

Sputnik
Anyone familiar with the history of space exploration knows that Sputnik was the very first man made object that was placed in Earth's orbit. Built and set off to space by the Russians, and , it was symbol of mankind's lofty aspirations to fly outside of the planet's atmosphere and beyond, despite the Cold War rivalry of the great space race. Sputnik's only function was to circle the globe and send continual beeping transmissions down to Earth. It was a harmless piece of machinery that in the end, demonstrated that when it came to ingenuity of humankind, the sky was truly the limit. Sputnik the movie, was also created by the Russians, in 2020, long after the thaw of the Cold War. But in this film, the "Sputnik" in question is an alien with parasitic tendencies and a taste for human flesh. And with it's ability to control it's host to meet it's appetital demands in a rather macbre version of "how to serve mankind", this Anti-Sputnik shows that it when it comes to human race acting as an "all-you-can-eat" buffet, this orbital nasty is much more of a symbolpc statemants that says that what's down here on the ground is what truly is the limit.

What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
Trying to get by in modern society these days can be a chore. Trying to get by in modern society as a bloodsucking immortal can be a nightmare. As four vampiric flatmates living in suburban New Zealand have been discovering for the better part of a century (or two). In this 2014 mockumentary, the camera follows the lives of these long-lived ghouls, who, despite their accumulated experiences, still haven't been able to overcome the daily domestic obstacles that continually challenge those things that they do in the shadows. WWDitS is a very hilarious dead-on take on the style of mock documentary filmmaking, taking advantage of the hand held camera tecnique to great effect and making a point that comes off sharper than the end of a wooden stake. Stabbing the concept of the classic vampire legend into the heart of it's parody, it manages to suck enough blood from it's victim to showcase the increasing pace and unending struggle that comes in a world that seems to change faster the longer one lives.

Vampyros Lesbos
To be quite honest, this movie may not really be good enough to recommend to anyone or even to include on this list. But I do have it on this list simply because I think it's a great way to start off a list, whether it be about favorite films of the 70's or just about any other subject matter. Plus, any film that can take a tried and true horror genre like vampirism and imbue it with the sexual allure of girl-on-girl action, particularly during the cinematically stiff period of the early 70's, deserves some kind of credit. So, strap-on a wooden stake or a massive black donkey-sized dong, and let's get going on a super-long journey through many of my preferred choices when it comes to seventies celluloid escapism. Or, if the mention of Vampyros Lesbos makes you feel the inclination, go watch some internet porn. Either way is a good way to "kill off" some time. BTW, if you think that putting this movie in the last spot is kind of cheating and not true to the nature of a list that's supposed to be about my "favorite movies of 1970's" then just pretend that VL is not on this list and replace it with Murmur of the Heart. It's a French coming-of-age story that also "came out" in 1971, about a boy who's dad is a gynocologist and who has a habit of engaging in some of the more innocent taboos of the day. Like masturbation. Which means he probably would mind that Vampy Lez is on this list.
